Marcos consults residents in flood-prone area in QC
MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Friday, June 26, revisited the flood-prone G. Araneta Avenue in Barangay Tatalon, Quezon City, to inspect the rehabilitated drainage system more than a month after personally checking on the project.
According to the President, the improved drainage system appears to be effective based on feedback from residents who have long suffered from severe flooding in the area.
“Mabuti naman, mukhang effective naman,” Marcos said, noting that residents told him floodwaters previously rose as high as the second floor of their homes even during moderate rainfall.
He added that residents have already noticed a significant improvement, saying floodwaters no longer rise as quickly and any accumulated water now drains much faster than before.
The President said the next priority is improving garbage collection to prevent drainage systems from becoming clogged. He plans to coordinate with Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte to establish a more organized and continuous declogging program, especially ahead of heavy rains.
While acknowledging that local residents have been conducting small-scale declogging efforts, Marcos stressed that a more systematic approach is needed due to the volume of garbage that contributes to flooding.
He also vowed to continue expanding flood control projects in the area, saying only half of the planned rehabilitation has been completed. The remaining section will also undergo improvements to further speed up water flow and reduce flooding along G. Araneta Avenue.
Marcos emphasized that addressing the area’s long-standing flooding problem is crucial to protecting homes, livelihoods, and businesses from recurring damage during the rainy season.
