MANILA, Philippines — The Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) has stated that the drowning death of Ateneo de Manila University student-athlete Rene Clert Baterbonia during a team-building activity in Dipaculao, Aurora should not be considered a simple accident, citing dangerous conditions and ongoing findings from its investigation.

Baterbonia, a member of the Ateneo Blue Eagles basketball program, tragically lost his life along with teammate Divine Adili during a team-building activity held on June 8, 2026. According to CIDG officials, the area where the activity took place was known for its strong currents and hazardous sea conditions, raising concerns about the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Authorities continue to investigate the events that led to the tragedy, with the CIDG examining whether criminal liability may be involved. Investigators have interviewed members of the coaching staff, players, and other individuals connected to the activity as part of the ongoing probe.

Baterbonia’s mother has publicly questioned the characterization of her son’s death as an accident, expressing concerns regarding details surrounding the activity, including reports about weights being used and the lack of immediate communication from team officials. She has called for a thorough and transparent investigation to determine what truly happened.
